New Video Clips!

Thanks so much for all your support at our "summer tour" gigs! We've just uploaded 2 new video clips on our "video" page.
"Lady Marmalade" from What the Dickens, and "This Love" from The Fiddler. They're both a bit monochrome-ish and maybe a bit green-ish looking, but that's only because our videoman used "night mode" with his video cam when he shot them.
Okay -- hope you guys enjoy, and please write in your comments.

Also -- the band will be going into rehearsals this autumn to gear up with new songs.
If you have requests, please let us know!

my baby

As a vocalist, i used to always envy the other players in the bands i've sung in.
They all had instruments that they could carry, play, polish, and adore.
I had nothing, because back then i just sang.

But about 10 years ago, SHE came into my life
-- a beautiful vintage Les Paul TV Special. I'm sure that she'd been held and stroked by dozens of skilled and sexy guitarists before me, and maybe they did to her things that i would never be skilled enough to do...
But somehow she ended up here with me.
I believe we are happy together, and i'm not letting her go.

As you can see in the photo, some past owner decided to carve and burn his or her initials - "MB"- on the back of her body... ouch.
I'm hoping it wasn't Michael Bolton. (does he even play guitar?)
And it probably wasn't Michelle Branch, either. (not yet old enough at the time).

Anyhow --
Lovers may come and go, but i know she will always be my special love.

So -- what about you?
Musician or not, tell me about YOUR special "instrument."

In my non Ali-Mo life, I'm an author, a writer, an editor, a traveling journalist, a lecturer at Todai, and a genial madman of ideas.
Got hired to give a speech to the JLPP--an association of Japanese Publishers, Editors, Translators and Writers.
Lots of VIPs in the audience. No band surrounding me. And me, sick as a pike post-Bangkok, from which I flew the night before.
Drumming may be hard, and it smashes up your body, but at least--you've got a great singer, guitarist, bass player and keyboardist in front of you. And lots of NOISE. It's a 'mother ship' surrounding you up on the stage. You can sweat and look ugly behind a pile of other geniuses, volume, and big fat drums.
But when you give a speech, or a reading, or any other 'literary' performance, there's just you, a microphone, a bit of water, and your ... nerves. Everything you do and say is attributed to YOU alone.
It sucks.

it's not that i'm an early bird.
feathers get ruffled -
and sometimes i just can't fall asleep.

4 years ago today,
a very great bassist passed away.
may he be resting in peace.

i wish i could rest in peace.

Great gig on Saturday--I guess. But I smashed the side of my hand in Thailand last week, and it hurt like hell after the show (see post-show pic). Aw, hell.

Thanks to the great audience literally chanting "Ali-MO!", we played well past our allotted ending hour. See, we were supposed to stop in time for the football/soccer match broadcast live from Germany on the giant screen at Fiddler, obliterating the stage. But nooooo ... our audience wouldn't let us go home!

Anyway, at least the keyboardist, bass player, singer and guitarist were rocking out, so I could hide behind the kit and nurse my aching hand. I smashed it against a table in fit of Bangkok rage, by the way. Stupid drummers ...

Here's a bad drummer joke for another tsuyu day: A little boy looks up to his mother and says, "Mom, when I grow up, I want to be a drummer." The mother looks down at her son with pity in her eyes. "Son," she says, shaking her head sadly, "You can't do both."

See ya in Roppo next month.

We've just had a WONDERFUL gig last Saturday at WHAT THE DICKENS, Ebisu.
To all the boys and girls who came out to see us, danced and sung with us,
THANK YOU SO MUCH for making it into such a great evening!
After our gig that night, the venue offered us another Saturday in August.
Will let you know the details when it nears.
Meanwhile -- our next gig is coming up later this month, on June 24th, Saturday,
at the Fiddler in Takadano-baba.
Please come!
